Workshop 5

Air monitoring to achieve goals in Minamata Convention

Presenters: David Gay, Sandy Steffen, Lynwill Martin, Guey Rong Sheu
Duration: 3hrs
Time slot: Morning (09h00 – 12h00)

Workshop Objectives:

To strengthen mercury air monitoring to achieve the goals of the Minamata Convention.

Abstract:
Measuring atmospheric mercury levels is critical to assessing the transport, transformation, and deposition of mercury in the environment. Further, understanding both spatial and temporal trends of atmospheric mercury concentrations is key to assessing the effectiveness of regulatory actions and climate change influences. This workshop will provide you an interactive opportunity to exchange thoughts with experts in the field of atmospheric mercury monitoring from around the world.

The workshop will begin with a history of air monitoring for mercury and the technology development over the years.  Discussions will then transition to issues such as methodology, data comparability and mercury measurement challenges. This will then move to an overview of the current atmospheric monitoring programs including successes and challenges. The workshop will next spend time discussing the future of atmospheric mercury monitoring. Topics such as appropriate technology used for the necessary measurements will be opened for discussion. Lastly, if time allows, everyone can discuss personal views on impacts of climate, emission changes and political challenges to close the workshop.
